What is a comic?

According to the cartoonist and comic book expert Scott McCloud comics are: "Two spatial sequences, arranged pictures or signs which provide information and/or generate an aesthetic effect with the viewer.“

In short, comic is an art form where a series of pictures describes a situation, short history or action. The pictures are often drawn and combined with text or speech.

The "Comic" concept first began at the end of the 18th century, at a time when most cartoons were limited in content and their humour consisted mainly of British jokes and caricatures.

However, not all comic books are humorous. The well known "Manga" concept originated from woodcuttings stamped by the artist Katsushika Hokusai. (In Japan "Manga" means comic).

A comic must consist of at least two pictures. Therefore, an illustration, caricature or cartoons which consist only of a single picture aren’t comics.
