The Basics
To begin with you will need a substantial surface to paint on.
In this case, canvas, a drawing block for oil painting or cardboard are all suitable.
We recommend beginners start with a drawing block or cardboard for oil painting, as painting on canvas can be very labour-intensive when starting out.
The surface that's best for you also depends on your personal preference.
To mark and outline your design on your chosen surface, use oil chalk (or our PHN pastels) in a very bright colour or pencil. Using charcoal can look quite greasy.
We recommend you use a suitable easel. A floor-standing easel is suitable for larger-sized pictures, for smaller pictures a table easel is sufficient.
