Techniques with Oil Pastels

Mixing colours effectively

Although there is an almost infinite choice in ready mixed tones, every artist – professional or beginner - should be able to mix colours by him or herself.

First, begin by mixing two colours. By using more of one colour and less of the other you can create interesting new shades. Give it a try!

You'll probably find that you use blue more often to mix dark colours than black. Blue merged tones are used predominantly for shading. Using white allows you to lighten colours.

Once you have practised creating shades using two colours, try to mix three colours with each other.

A tip!

Start with the brightest colour and apply the darker colour over it.
